Yesterday we spent the morning with Philipe from ProNativas in Monteverde. ProNativas is a Nongovernmental Organization (NGO) founded by the famous local botanist Willow Zuchowski. The mission of ProNativas is to "Promote gardens that are more ecological, diverse, economic and that give habitat to animals". Native plants are the best at promoting this mission, but sadly most greenhouses (viveros) in Costa Rica only offer a few species that are typically not native. ProNativas is educating people on the useful, beautiful plants available and promoting their uses in landscaping.
Philipe taught us about these natives and the invasive species found in the Monteverde area.
After his presentation we all went to work doing a variety of chores to help ProNative in their gardens and greenhouse. As you will see everyone enjoyed getting our hands dirty for such a good cause!

This blog will explore the experiences of 15 Trinity University students on a month-long ecology course in Costa Rica in June 2017. This course is being offered in collaboration with the Monteverde Institute (http://www.monteverde-institute.org/).
